Desert Wanderings

Unlike the Israelites, we only spent two and a half weeks in the desert. Even so, the terrain often reminded us of our trip to the Holy Land, with lots of wilderness! When we started across I-10 (or “the ten” as the locals say), I wondered how we would find things to see along the way. Surely we had seen the most amazing sights already. But I was in for a surprise! Look at the sample of things that we did after leaving Phoenix!

Prayer Garden

In Western Phoenix, Phillip Williams pastors a small Baptist church called, “Church of the Valley.” We were looking for a place to park our van and spend the night so we pulled into the church parking lot and noticed that there was a light on in the church.

Phoenix, the “Wright” Country

Since Phoenix (actually suburban Scottsdale) was the winter residence of Frank Lloyd Wright and his school of architecture, Taliesin West, (they spent summers at their primary home, Taliesin, in Wisconsin), a lot of what we did there was to visit some of his many projects in the area.

Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree National Park, located in Southern California near Palm Springs, is a park named after a tree that has a very “Dr. Seuss” kind of appearance. These trees are mostly found, however, in the Mojave Desert portion of the park. Though you’ll also find them growing next to a saguaro cactus in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona or mixed with pines in the San Bernadino Mountains.

Sand is our Friend

We love sand! It’s fun to play with and to walk on too. We like going to the beach where we can make sand castles and write in the sand, only to see it washed clean when the first wave rolls into shore. But sometimes . . .

Thinking About an Old Song

When my Aunt Ruth was dying, the Lord brought cousin Judy (Ruth’s only living child) one of the “old” songs each day to comfort and encourage her, songs like “It is Well With My Soul,” “I Love to Tell the Story,” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”  It is that last one that I’ve been thinking about a lot this week.

God’s Servants

Jeremiah and Angel are ministering for the Lord in an area that many people would prefer not to be. Living in Los Angeles, CA, their hearts beat for the many who are living without hope and without God while thinking they are doing just fine.

Are you kids OK?

She was a middle-aged woman, approaching us while we were cleaning up after our breakfast in a local park in Morro Bay, CA. Her greeting, however, caught us by surprise.

Do You Know the Way to San Jose?

That song has been going around in my mind for some time, even now, nearly a week after we left. Undoubtedly our time in San Jose was a big highlight of our trip—visiting Daniel and Dia in their home for the first time, going on delightful outings with them, going to church with them (three times!), getting to know the sunny cities in the San Francisco Bay area, and especially seeing how God even worked through the auto accident our first day there as part of the “good times,” memories that will be with us forever. We are truly grateful for every day that we were in the Bay area.

A Romans 8:28 Experience

Sometimes things happen that we just don’t understand, like the artwork above. We had planned to stay a week in San Jose near Daniel and Dia, and then head on down to Yosemite, Sequoia, and Grand Canyon before the weather got too cool in the mountains to visit those awesome features of nature. When our van was damaged, it necessitated a change in plans, and as it turned out, the accident truly did become a blessing in disguise. Let me enumerate our blessings:

‘Oops’ Update

Our previous article left some of our readers with unanswered questions. So we are attempting to resolve those questions. Whenever a particular experience takes place, there is always some kind of “resolution” as time moves forward.

One of those “Oops” Moments

What do you do when the unexpected happens? In our case, we had parked the van and were in a store when a Toyota decided to take our parking place.
