New Leaves

Nothing is clearer from the New Testament than that the Lord Jesus expects us to take the low position of servants. This is not just an extra obligation, which we may or may not assume as we please. It is the very heart of that new relationship which the disciple is to take if he is to know fellowship with Christ and any degree of holiness in his life.

We want to be saved, but we insist that Christ do all the dying. No cross for us, no dethronement, no dying. We remain king within the little kingdom of Mansoul and wear our tinsel crown with all the pride of a Caesar; but we doom ourselves to shadows and weakness and spiritual sterility.

Do not waste time bothering whether you 'love' your neighbor; act as if you did. As soon as we do this, we find one of the greatest secrets. When you are behaving as if you loved someone, you will presently come to love him.

If we yearned after God even as much as a cow yearns for her calf, we would be the worshiping and effective believers God wants us to be. If we longed for God as a bride looks forward to the return of her husband, we would be a far greater force for God than we are now.

Keep believing, keep trusting, keep company with friends who care about you, and stay true to the fundamentals of faith. The mark of a saint of God is not how well you are doing, but what you do when you aren't doing well.

Indulgence in known sin of any kind will greatly and rapidly sear our conscience. Whenever conscience has called our attention to the sinfulness of any act or course of action, and we still persist in it, this is a presumptuous sin, and such a course will soon cause our conscience to become seared with a hot iron.

God uses brokenness to get our attention. His desired result is the surrender of our will. For both Saul of Tarsus and Chuck Colson, brokenness resulted in a turning of their hearts to God for salvation. At other times, God uses brokenness to get those who already know Him to let go of whatever prevents them from experiencing Him more fully. In either case, brokenness means recognizing that what we have is not enough.

The main goal is to know Jesus. If you're not doing that then all else won't mean much at all.

Deeply immersed in meditation during a church service, Italian poet Dante Alighieri failed to kneel at the appropriate moment. His enemies hurried to the bishop and demanded that Dante be punished for his sacrilege. Dante defended himself by saying, "If those who accuse me had had their eyes and minds on God, as I had, they too would have failed to notice events around them, and they most certainly would not have noticed what I was doing.

If you have not grasped the gospel fully and deeply, you will return to being condescending, condemning, anxious, insecure, joyless, and angry all the time. [You will] have an undercurrent of anger toward life circumstances, hold grudges long and bitterly, look down at people of other races, religions, and lifestyles, experience life as joyless, rushing drudgery, have little intimacy in [your prayer life] and have deep insecurity that makes [you] overly sensitive to criticism and rejection yet fierce and merciless in condemning others.

If we could only grasp the fact that God's Word is...the revelation of divine truth from the person of God Himself. It has come as a divine communication in the sacred Scriptures. It has come to us in the guidance and conviction imparted by the divine Spirit of God within our beings. It has been modeled for us in Jesus Christ, the incarnate Word and the eternal Son.

What are we allowing the word of God to say to us, and what is our reaction to that word? Have we consumed and digested the book? Have we absorbed the word of God into our lives? Or are we among those content to be part of a Christian congregation where there are no extreme demands, where fellowship will be consistently pleasant and without responsibility?

(2 Peter 1:19-21) [ESV] And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

A Christian should always have one eye upon his end—and the other eye upon his way.…The end for which a wise Christian lives is—that he may live without end; and therefore his way of living is, that he may live to spend his life continually in the ways of life. He is always walking in those paths in which he can see heaven before him.

God longs for us to know Him, and has revealed Himself in His Son. He has redeemed us through the blood His resurrected Son shed on the Cross, and has called us into a Spiritual relationship with Him.
