The most wonderful secret of living a holy life does not lie in imitating Jesus, but in letting the perfect qualities of Jesus exhibit themselves in my human flesh.

In Shansi I found Chinese Christians who were accustomed to spend time in fasting and prayer. They recognized that this fasting, which so many dislike, which requires faith in God, since it makes one feel weak and poorly, is really a Divinely appointed means of grace. Perhaps the greatest hindrance to our work is our own imagined strength; and in fasting we learn what poor, weak creatures we are-dependent on a meal of meat for the little strength which we are so apt to lean upon.

If we are not careful we may view the gathering of God's people not as a mutual gathering to celebrate our identity with the person, work, and ongoing cause of Christ, but a place that primarily provides an identity with others in terms of friendships, fellowship, and even therapy.

(ed: Let's come together to exalt and praise our Lord Jesus Christ. Let's ask the Lord to anoint our hearts with His Spirit so that we are not distracted from the main reason of why we gather together.)

By God's grace, use the time you have left on the present Earth to store up for yourself treasures on the New Earth, to be laid at Christ's feet for his glory. Then look forward to meeting in Heaven Jesus himself, as well as those touched by your Christ-exalting choices.

When I get to heaven, I shall see three wonders there. The first wonder will be to see many there whom I did not expect to see; the second wonder will be to miss many people who I did expect to see; the third and greatest of all will be to find myself there.

"Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin." Romans 7:25 (NASV)

The context of this statement tells us that Paul could not handle his flesh by himself. He was a defeated, wretched, and miserable man. He had tried with good intentions to obey God's command, but apart from Him he was a failure. …But then Paul says it is through Jesus Christ. This indicates that He is my source to handle myself. He is the means through which I overcome my problems. He is the source I interact with when facing temptations. As my source, Christ is the One through whom I handle and touch everything in my Christian life.

The prophets of Israel divided people simply into worshipers of Jehovah and worshipers of idols, and this division is still valid, only we must widen the conception and definition of idols somewhat. Then idols were images of the gods the nations acknowledged, and idols today still include these; but idols include every thing that men allow …to usurp the place that rightfully belongs to God as supreme.

Does your soul continually magnify the Lord, and your spirit rejoice in God your Savior? Having learned in everything to give thanks, do you find it is a joyful and a pleasant thing to be thankful? Is God the center of your soul, the sum of all your desires?

Paul the Apostle

[May you] be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. (Colossians 1:9b-12 ESV)

As long as God keeps you here on Earth, it's exactly where he wants you. He's preparing you for another world. He knows precisely what he's doing. Through your suffering, difficulty, and depression, he's expanding your capacity for eternal joy. Our lives on Earth are a training camp to ready us for Heaven.

We are not loved because we are lovable, for we are not. It is true that some of us may be lovable to some others of us, but this is only when we look at the matter from a human perspective. From God’s perspective there is nothing in us to make us even remotely desirable. He is holy; we are unholy. He is just; we are unjust. He is loving; we are filled with hatred and all forms of sin. In short, we are sinful and in willful rebellion against Him. Yet He loves us. In fact, so great a marvel is this that God even uses it to commend His love to us.

The greatest single secret of evangelistic or missionary effectiveness is the willingness to suffer and die. It may be a death to popularity (by faithfully preaching the unpopular biblical gospel), or to pride (by the use of modes methods in reliance on the Holy Spirit), or to racial and national prejudice (by identification with another culture), or to material comfort (by adopting a simple lifestyle). But the servant must suffer if he is to bring light to the nations, and the seed must die if it is to multiply.

May the Holy Ghost make your heart obedient to the constraining power of Christ's love, that your prayer may be, 'Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.'

The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. (Lamentations 3:25-26 ESV)
