(ed: Sorry for the repeat this morning from yesterday. Guess I thought there was nothing more to meditate upon! OK - here's something…)

The only possibility of understanding the teaching of Jesus is by the light of the Spirit of God on the inside. If we have never had the experience of taking our commonplace religious shoes off our commonplace religious feet, and getting rid of all the undue familiarity with which we approach God, it is questionable whether we have ever stood in His presence."

May your heart be filled with "holy awe" as you come into His presence.

God has blessed us with so many blessings that our mouths ought to be constantly filled with expressions of praise and thanksgiving. We have many relationships that God has given to us with others. Those "others" are "blessings" for which we praise our God. (ed: I am rejoicing with shouts of praise for my wife of 52 years today - God has blessed me more than I can say! And… I'm unworthy of such great blessing!)

Paul instructed us to rejoice and again he said it, Rejoice!

Often decisions are made on the basis of what is most expedient and profitable for the moment. Or a decision is made solely on the basis of what is the most personal advantage. Decisions should be made, however, on the basis of principle, and that which is proper and noble and admirable and right in the sight of God!

As Christians we are the recipients of great and precious truths. We are to assimilate those truths carefully. It takes time. It doesn't happen overnight. It takes a lifetime of careful, disciplined meditation.

Nothing is possible in this life without God. Without Jesus, people can create nothing, they can accomplish nothing of eternal value. The life you have is a gift from God and you rightly owe all you have to Jesus who has given you eternal life. Only through the Spirit are we able to accomplish that which pleases our Lord!

1 Timothy 1:5 tells us what God wants from every Christian: 'love that issues from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith' (ESV). These three things alone can be the subject of many selahs [pausing to reflect and meditate - to 'think' on these things]. What does it mean to have a pure heart? What is a good conscience? How do I know I have a sincere faith? We need to come to grips with these things if we are to avoid vain discussions and no understanding of what we are saying or teaching (see 1 Timothy 1:6-7).

Jesus Christ meets the need we have to see God. He makes the invisible visible. He is the manifestation to the world of the unseen Father. And to see God in Christ is to still the troubled waters in our lives, because we catch a glimpse of the love that God has for us. Who among us can turn away from that love once we see it? And who of us would crush that love under our feet once we've realized it in our own lives?

We humans know we are not perfect, but we flatter ourselves that we are not particularly needy either. ...If you do not truly know God, it is because you are enamored with your inflated views of yourself and refuse to humble yourself and seek Him.

Let a man set his heart only on doing the will of God and he is instantly free. If we understand our first and sole duty to consist of loving God supremely and loving everyone, even our enemies, for God's dear sake, then we can enjoy spiritual tranquility under every circumstance.

Earthly possessions dazzle our eyes and delude us into thinking that they can provide security and freedom from anxiety. Yet all the time they are the very source of anxiety.

God, in his infinite skill, blends all things in our lives and cooks them in the oven of adversity. One day we shall be able to see them fully transformed. Then we can taste that they are good. For now, we must believe it.

Meditation on God's Word has given me the help and strength to pass peacefully through deep trials. What a difference there is when the soul is refreshed in fellowship with God early in the morning! Without spiritual preparation, the service, the trials, and the temptations of the day can be overwhelming.

We look back and marvel at God's daily provision of manna and water for [the Israelites of the Exodus]. What a table He provided for forty years. But we often forget! The same God is just as eager to provide spiritual manna today for those who look to Him. Actually, it is not so much a question of 'can God furnish,' as it is, 'will we trust Him to provide?'

God's value system is different from the world's—in the way to pursue a career, in the use of money, in family values, in social behavior. The world says success is first. But God says he is to be first. The world says to get all the money you can. God says to give. The world says to conform to contemporary lifestyles, but God says to live by convictions from his word. The world says God is just religion, but God says he wants our devotion.

Just as God has humbled himself in making himself known 'in the humility and shame of the cross,’ we must humble ourselves if we are to encounter him. We must humble ourselves by being prepared to be told where to look to find God, rather than trusting in our own insights and speculative abilities.
