Christmas Letter 2017

Welcome, all wonders in one night! Eternity shut in a span!

Summer in Winter! Day in Night! Heaven in Earth and God in Man!

Great little one whose all-embracing birth

Lifts Earth to Heaven, Stoops Heaven to Earth! – Richard Crenshaw

God has truly blessed us this year—a busy but very special year. . .

God's Answer

It started out as a regular evening as we arrived in Columbia, South Carolina on our way to attend a retirement party for our good friends in Port Wentworth, Georgia. But, God had something else in mind for us that evening when we looked for a place to spend the night.

Robbed but not Ruined

In our travels, we have found that the vast majority of the people we have met, including police officers, are pleasant, polite, interesting and helpful. For example, just now, as I was writing this, sitting in a lovely pavilion overlooking a lighthouse on Lake Michigan, a man and his dog “Rosie” stopped by to chat, while out for their morning walk. But in St. Louis, we met one person who was none of the above, and his actions have wounded, but not defeated us.

Christmas Letter 2014

The Joyces have landed! Well, temporarily at least. After 21 months away from our house, we are now spending some time at home, which feels good. It seems very luxurious to have running water—HOT running water, an electric stove with four burners, a refrigerator that actually keeps things from spoiling, and central heat and air! We are living in the lap of luxury!

A little over a year and a half ago, I wrote a very short blog entry entitled, “Faithful Servants” dated February 5, 2013. After retiring from my position as pastor of the Johnson City Alliance Church, Bonnie and I began to travel around the country in our cargo van. The first stop we made was to visit with our mentors and friends, Ron and Reba Mayers.

Small World

When we were in the Everglades earlier this year, we enjoyed attending the ranger-led talks. At one of these, the ranger asked that each of us tell what state we were from. The lady next to me said that she was from Vermont, so afterward I asked her where in Vermont she called home. When she said “Calais,” I knew she was from my sister Dot’s neck of the woods.

Johnny and His Dog

Because we are letterboxers we often find ourselves wandering through a cemetery in search of a hidden letterbox. This is what we were doing on July 28, 2014 when we ran across a very unusual and distinct grave monument.

Are you kids OK?

She was a middle-aged woman, approaching us while we were cleaning up after our breakfast in a local park in Morro Bay, CA. Her greeting, however, caught us by surprise.

Living Legends and Deadwood

Strange title, but it fits. Living Legend regards the monument to presidents that made an impact on our country and Deadwood is a gold rush town that went bust.

Chicago and Robie House

We spent Friday and Saturday in Chicago, wore out our feet, and in the process saw many amazing buildings and constructions. Millennium Park and the Loop were on Friday’s agenda, with Robie House and the University of Chicago campus on Saturday’s. From “The Bean” to Trump Tower, the Chicago Cultural Center to Robie House, we were impressed with all that is Chicago, and realized that one could spend months there and still not scratch the surface of this amazing city that literally rose from the ashes of the Great Fire.

An Urban Adventure

This article is called “An Urban Adventure” but perhaps “Adventure” is the wrong word to use. It should perhaps be “Nightmare.”

Proverbs 16:18

Hmmmm….I wonder what is meant by that reference? I suppose it has something to do with a lesson learned, or something like that.

Juniper Springs Adventure!

Remember that line from the old TV show, 3-2-1 Contact—“The Tropics are HOT?” Ahhh, not so much.

“Shakedown” Trip

Our “Grand Adventure” has finally begun. Oh, I know, this is just a “trial run” but it does seem like a beginning. The church dedication yesterday was a milestone. From now until Feb. 3 we live in two worlds. I feel kinship with Grandpa Doten today.

A New Adventure

I really can’t remember when or how the idea of taking a retirement trip began in form in our minds. But as it developed, I began to realize that, for me at least, there’s probably a genetic component.
